COUNTER-COUTURE AT MUSEUM OF ARTS & DESIGN (MAD), NEW YORK

July 3, 2017

The exhibition text above brilliantly explains the historical context and ethos of this (mainly) fashion exhibition. And it is held at a time when the same themes are uncannily topical, not just because of political resistance but because of the need more than ever to promote eco/sustainable wear and peace with our environment. One historical/cultural reference that I loved in these pieces is the tribal/primitive/native American inspired jewellery, which of course philosophically connects to the idea of harmony with nature as these civilisations not only lived in harmony with nature but also worshipped nature.

I thought it was ironic seeing a show promoting the topics discussed in a museum sitting adjacent to Trump Hotel (which is prominently viewed from the museum restaurant).
