CHRISTOFOROS SAVVA EXHIBITION, THE HELLENIC CENTRE LONDON
I attended this exhibition six months ago in London. Savva is considered the great modern master of Cypriot art; he is credited as having spurred the start of abstraction in art in Cyprus. Having only lived a short life, yet in this time Savva proved incredibly gifted, versatile and highly experimental as an artist.
His textiles date to the 1960s, for the time they were quite avant-garde and have a freshness about them that still feels completely contemporary today. They were profoundly influenced by Cypriot themes from antiquity, mythology to every day and rural life.

Red Goat, 1961
Braiding, 1964
His other work in this exhibition included painting and sculpture in multiple media. There was a particular period of his painting that incorporated textures and fabrics and where he used paint in a thick, textured way and the compositions almost look ‘collaged’.
